All you are doing really is “faking it till you make it” – and when you look at it in this light “faking it” seems a lot different!

In my opinion “faking it” is the real cornerstone of personal development, and if you take this approach in any area – looking at those who are successful around you and aiming to replicate their beliefs and patterns of behavior then you too can be successful.

We have all heard the expression “fake it till you make it” before, yet few take it seriously. It is seen at best as a short term solution to gain a little confidence when you are under pressure, rather than a viable way to push yourself towards real success.

I think the problem lies in the term itself – at least the “fake it” part. This implies that you will never be successful, or that you are so unsuccessful that you have to pretend.

I think this way of thinking is a little strange as “Faking it till you make it” is simply just a form of “modelling”. Essentially it is just a way of instilling patterns of behaviour within you which you don’t yet have… i.e. helping you to “fake it till you make it”.

This more professional approach to faking it known as “Modelling” sounds technical but they are one and the same thing really. By definition modelling is simply looking towards other people who are successful in an area you want to be successful in and aiming to copy, or basically model their behavior, habits, characteristics and personality traits – the idea being that once you successfully model the core elements of their behaviour you too will become more successful in this area.

For example, successful entrepreneurs will all share a lot of the same personality traits and characteristics – such as enjoying taking calculated risks, a deep desire to succeed in business, an ability to think fast and solve problems, the tendency to come back even more determined from any setbacks, perhaps they will have larger egos than most and so on.

If you wanted to become an entrepreneur too, then you could use principles of modelling to practice these character traits yourself.

It is possible to stimulate a desire to succeed in business and to start taking more calculated risks. Then eventually, once you too are confident to take risks, and driven more than ever to succeed in business then you will stand a better chance of succeeding as an entrepreneur – and this can be used for almost any pursuit; you can look at the attitudes of people who managed to successfully lose weight, even at the shared mental traits and approaches to training of top athletes.
